Good Systems Announces Summer Research Opportunities

Good Systems announces three summer research opportunities to help advance the grand challenge’s mission to design ethical AI technologies to benefit society.  

Faculty and graduate students who have not yet participated in a Good Systems-funded project are eligible to apply for fellowships to conduct innovative research activities. Undergraduate students are invited to apply to participate in Good Systems’ core research projects in the areas of racial justice, smart cities, disinformation, surveillance and privacy, robotics, and the future of work.

Faculty Fellowships 

Eligibility: UT Austin faculty, research scientists, or postdoctoral fellows  

Required Application Materials: CV, research proposal, personal statement   

Submission Deadline: April 1, 2022 at 5pm CST  

Award Amount: $4,000  

Good Systems seeks innovative proposals to conduct research activities that investigate the ethical implications of AI technologies in society over a three-month summer fellowship period. A wide range of themes, topics, and projects are welcome, including but not limited to those involving transparency and explainability, bias and discrimination, privacy and surveillance, safety and security, accountability, and the promotion of human values.  

Applications will be evaluated based on creativity, feasibility, engagement, subject matter expertise, and evidence of prior research accomplishments.

Graduate Student Fellowships 

Eligibility: Students in a master’s or doctoral program at UT Austin  

Required Application Materials: CV, research proposal, personal statement   

Submission Deadline: April 1, 2022 at 5pm CST  

Award Amount: $6,000

Undergraduate Research Experiences 

Eligibility: Undergraduate students at UT Austin with a minimum GPA of 3.0  

Required Application Materials:  Application Statement, Resumé, and Academic Summary  

Submission Deadline: April 8, 2022 at 5pm CST  

Compensation: $15/hour for up to 40 hours/week for up to 10 weeks  

Good Systems seeks undergraduate students to participate in Good Systems core research projects over a ten-week period in the summer (normally, from June 6, 2022 to August 12, 2022). As an interdisciplinary program, Good Systems encourages students from all majors to apply. 

Undergraduate researchers should tailor their applications to support one of six Good Systems projects, which investigate ethical AI in the areas of racial justice, disinformation, robotics, smart cities, smart tools and the future of work, and privacy and surveillance.
