2022 Program Schedule

Good Systems Annual Symposium
Defining, Evaluating, and Building Ethical AI Systems

2:00 - 2:15 PM

Symposium Welcome Address

Learn about Good Systems and the UT Austin Grand Challenge Initiative from Jennifer Lyon Gardner, Deputy Vice President for Research at UT Austin, and Sam Baker, Chair, Good Systems.

2:15 - 3:15 PM

Keynote Speech and Q&A with Dr. Milind Tambe

Dr. Milind Tambe, "AI for Social Impact: Results from Deployments for Public Health and Conservation"

Dr. Milind Tambe is the Gordon McKay Professor of Computer Science, Harvard University, and Director of AI for Social Good, Google Research (India)

As AI and multiagent systems research advances, there is tremendous opportunity to use this research to address complex societal problems. This talk will focus on domains of public health and conservation, and address one key cross-cutting challenge: how to effectively deploy our limited intervention resources in these problem domains. Dr. Tambe will share results from work around the world in using AI to address challenges such as HIV prevention, maternal and child care interventions, and wildlife conservation. It will highlight key research advances in multiagent reasoning and learning, in particular in restless multiarmed bandits, influence maximization in social networks, computational game theory, and decision-focused learning. Dr. Tambe will explore the ultimate goal of this research to help local communities and non-profits benefit directly from advances in AI tools and techniques.

3:15 - 5:00 PM

Poster Session & Mingling

Explore Good Systems projects, learn about key takeaways from Good Systems researchers, and enjoy light bites and beverages during this meet-and-greet poster session.

8:45 AM - 12:00 PM

Learn about Good Systems' core research projects, their progress to date, and goals for the future.

8:45 am - Welcome

9:00 am - Being Watched: Embedding Ethics in Public Cameras
This project investigates the social acceptance of cameras and video data and how to develop technical solutions that will satisfy privacy concerns. Presented by Dr. Sharon Strover (School of Journalism and Media) and Atlas Wang (Electrical and Computer Engineering).
9:30 am - Designing Responsible AI Technologies to Curb Disinformation
This project employs machine learning to understand how disinformation arises and spreads and how to design effective human-centered interventions. Presented by Dr. Jessy Li (Linguistics)
10:00 am - A Good System for Smart Cities
This project seeks to build a system that will link city datasets to predict the effects of urban development projects, including Austin’s Project Connect. Presented by Dr. Weijia Xu (Texas Advanced Computing Center) and Dr. Junfeng Jiao (School of Architecture)
10:30 am - AI & the Future of Racial Justice

This project explores racial disparities in AI-based systems and seeks to design and implement solutions in the areas of public safety, transportation, and health. Presented by Dr. Min Kyung Lee (School of Information), Angela Haddad, and Angie Zhang.

11:00 am - Making Smart Tools Work for Everyone
This project designs smart hand tools that have embedded AI to empower workers to accomplish more while keeping their jobs secure. Presented by Dr. Kenneth R. Fleischmann (School of Information), Dr. Sherri Greenberg (LBJ School of Public Affairs), and Dr. Raul Longoria (Mechanical Engineering)
11:30 am - Living and Working with Robots
This project works to overcome the technical and social hurdles to deploying robots by building and studying them in the communities where they will be used. Presented by Dr. Elliott Hauser (School of Information)
