Parenting in a pandemic presents unique challenges that may affect the physical, emotional and behavioral health of parents and children alike, and the academic progress of children.

This project addresses the conflict between convenience and privacy inherent to computer vision with the goal of developing future computer vision technologies that support diverse users with visual impairments, especially those who are traditionally underserved.

Participation in physical activity is associated with better performance in school, but most children do not meet the recommendations of the 2008 Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans for 60 minutes of daily moderate-to-vigorous physical activity.

Texas landscapes and ecosystems are changing fast, losing tree cover and topsoil, making it more difficult for wildlife and people to thrive without the protections and benefits nature provides. A remote network of visual and acoustic sensors placed across the state will act as eyes and ears, detecting environmental and biodiversity-related information like weather, water flows, and animal noises in the form of sound and imagery.

Externalizing disorders, including behaviors such as tantrums, defiance, and aggression, are among the most common and costly disorders of childhood. Behavioral indicators of these disorders often emerge by the third year of life, but current methods of identifying them are often time-intensive and expensive.

We are working with several City of Austin offices to confront the problem of homelessness. People experience homelessness as a continuum, ranging from housing instability to incarceration, couch-surfing to street homelessness, and episodic to chronic.

Human responses to climate stress and catastrophic events like hurricanes, drought, and resource conflict have been oversimplified for years portrayed as either miraculous tales of survival or total collapse. This project abandonthat outdated mentality and looks to ancient civilizations to understand how resilience, in many forms, has influenced human choices, movement, and development.

Incidents of discrimination are a part of everyday life for young people of color, and although many studies document the negative effects of discrimination, we know almost nothing about how it influences health over time. How do experiences of bias and mistreatment play a part in creating racial and ethnic health disparities?
