Postdoc Presentation Series - Flexibility and Insecurity: Disability as Motivation in the Gig Economy

Event Status
Scheduled

Like many Americans struggling to get by, people with disabilities have turned to the gig economy to make ends meet. In this presentation, Kathy Hill explores the labor market opportunities and experiences of gig workers with disabilities and health issues by examining two questions: (1) (How) does health and/or disability influence labor market opportunities? (2) How does disability and/or health shape peoples’ experiences of work in the gig economy? To answer these questions, she draws on interviews with gig workers combined with analysis of original survey data collected through a nationwide survey fielded through social media advertisements.

Kathy Hill is a Good Systems Future of Work postdoctoral research fellow at the University of Texas at Austin School of Information. Kathy Hill's research takes a mixed methods approach to studying precarious work, algorithms, wellbeing, and disability. Kathy received her Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of Texas at Austin, where she focused on experiences of work and health in the platform gig economy.
