MEDIA ADVISORY: Artificial Intelligence and Austin Tech at Capital Factory

Event Status
Scheduled
EVENT: Artificial intelligence researchers from The University of Texas at Austin are joining a panel of Austin tech leaders to discuss how we can ensure that AI advances are consistent with established ethical standards so that they’re compatible with society’s needs and values. Even with the best intentions, AI can be harmful in ways we fail to predict because it’s developed by humans with biases and competing priorities. At the same time, AI has the potential to make our lives safer, our work faster and more efficient, and help us achieve things we couldn’t do without it. So how can technologists be sure these advances are beneficial and not detrimental to society? Panelists include:
  • Junfeng Jiao, Associate Professor, The University of Texas at Austin
  • Charlie Burgoyne, Founder & CEO, Valkyrie Intelligence
  • Chris Burns, Sr. AI/ML Solutions Architect, Amazon Web Services
  • Rick Hennessy, US Central Lead, Fjord Designed Intelligence
  • Stephen Straus, Managing Director, KUNGFU.AI
  • Rebecca Taylor, Industry Fellow, The Ethics Project
WHEN: Tuesday, November 5, 2019, 6 – 9 p.m.   WHERE: Capital Factory, Austin City Limits Room   INTERVIEW OPTIONS: Media should plan on arriving early or staying late for interviews.   LOCATION: The event will take place in the Austin City Limits room at Capital Factory, located on the 16th floor of the Omni Hotel. This event is co-hosted by Good Systems, an 8-year grand challenge project at The University of Texas at Austin. The team is made up of AI experts, robotics engineers, philosophers, humanists, computer and information scientists, policy experts (and more), and the goal is to create a new way of designing values-based AI technologies that both protect and improve our world. Good Systems, one of three Bridging Barriers grand challenges at UT — ambitious “moonshot goals” that bring researchers together from across campus to tackle some of the most pressing environmental, social, and humanitarian issues of our time.
