This talk applies archival concepts such as accountability and chain of custody to a forensic reconstruction of disinformation narratives circulated around the January 6, 2021 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol. It begins by discussing archival approaches to fairness, accountability, and transparency, arguing that recordkeeping professions are uniquely suited to aid in the preservation and analysis of algorithmic systems. Next, it presents a case study using forensic JPEG compression analysis to authenticate sources and reconstruct circulation histories, identifying a campaign of coordinated inauthentic behavior in the process. By applying archival tools and concepts to the authentication of digital sources, this presentation demonstrates the value of archival expertise in governance and policy-making around algorithmic systems.
