Resilience Roundtable Series

Deep down the bayous in Southern Louisiana live several Indigenous communities, among them are the Pointe-au-Chien Indian Tribe (PACIT). While we often imagine that Native southerners were all forcibly removed from their homelands in the 19th century, PACIT is one of many communities who found strategies that allowed them to remain in their homelands.

Just as the impacts of climate change vary geographically, so do our conversations and the language we choose to use around climate disasters. This event encourages us to consider how we discuss land, water, nonhuman life, colonialism, the changes impacting each of us, and how language is expressed through our position and location.

Join us for a roundtable discussion on the ways in which creative interventions help foster both introspection and public discourse surrounding sense of place, place memory, and the experience of rootedness or dislocation.

As part of this project, local nonprofits Arts New Orleans and the Water Leaders Institute partnered to design a cohort-based professional development program to equip local artists and neighborhood residents with knowledge about critical civic issues to prepare them to co-create public art projects.

This panel brings together scholars and practitioners from environmental humanities, mental health, artistic, and pedagogical spaces to discuss these challenges while sharing tools and practices we can use to navigate complex emotional landscapes.
