BACKGROUND: Artificial intelligence is changing the way we live and work (often, for the better), but it has the potential to be harmful in ways we fail to predict. Good Systems is a an 8-year grand challenge project at The University of Texas at Austin. The team is made up of AI experts, robotics engineers, philosophers, humanists, computer and information scientists, policy experts (and more), and the goal is to create a new way of designing values-based AI technologies that both protect and improve our world. Good Systems is one of three Bridging Barriers grand challenges at UT — ambitious “moonshot goals” that bring researchers together from across campus to tackle some of the most pressing environmental, social, and humanitarian issues of our time.
